## What the map shows

Colour does most of the work on this map of the Middle East and South Asia. Four states are shaded dark green: Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan, both wings. The USSR and China are red. Other states are yellow. The printed words are these.

FOR PEACE, SECURITY, ECONOMIC

DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL ADVANCEMENT

## Whose map

The sheet is signed by the Forces Information Section of the ISPR Directorate and numbered FI-M-1. The archive's maker line puts that office first and adds that the sheet was distributed via the U.S. Information Agency, in its series for Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The catalog title places it in Karachi. The record does not say what part the agency played beyond distribution, or how many copies there were. FRAME classes the source as unidentified. A companion sheet in the archive, FI-M-2, shows the pact's flags.

## How to read it

FRAME tags it bandwagon and glittering generalities. Bandwagon, because the shaded states are joined on paper to two great powers; glittering generalities, because the printed aims are peace, security, development and advancement, with no detail. The colour scheme carries the rest. Red is kept for the USSR and China alone.

The heading chooses a frame of its own: these are the "Muslim member nations." The slogan sets them "with" the United Kingdom and the United States rather than naming those two as members, and the sheet does not say what the pact obliged anyone to do. A map is a strong form of argument because it looks like plain fact. The record's list of labels includes Kashmir and "Junagadh & Manavedar"; the archive leaves them without comment. For another U.S. Information Agency sheet that argues with a map, see the 1954 Saigon poster split at the 17th parallel. The U.S. Information Agency hub has more.
