## What the sheet prints

An open book, drawn far larger than the buildings around it, rises over a street. Below it, men in uniforms of the Nazi period throw books onto a fire, and the sky is tinted red. The book's page carries a paragraph signed with Franklin D. Roosevelt's name, and the slogan runs across the foot of the sheet.

Books cannot be killed by fire.

People die, but books never die. No man and no force can put thought in a concentration camp forever. No man and no force can take from the world the books that embody man's eternal fight against tyranny. In this war, we know, books are weapons.

## Who issued it

The issuer is the Office of War Information, 1942. The archive cites the National Archives' World War II Posters in Record Group 44, item 44-PA-127, NAID 513575, retrieved on 4 October 2026, and records the sheet as a public-domain U.S. government work.

## How to read it

Two things carry the poster. The signature lends the paragraph a president's authority, and the bonfire supplies the threat. What the paragraph says is sound: a regime that burns books is announcing what it fears, and ideas outlast the people who try to destroy them. Americans had every reason to set their own press against that scene.

The metaphor deserves a second look. If books are weapons, someone decides which side a given book is on and how it should be issued. The sheet does not raise that question, and the archive record does not say how the phrase was used beyond this poster. A free country's answer is that no office picks the arsenal, and that the books a government dislikes stay on the shelf anyway. That is the stronger version of the poster's own claim.

A later OWI sheet on the same subject, The Nazis Burned These Books, links back here. Both belong to the anti-Nazi propaganda set and the Office of War Information hub. The Roosevelt administration essay reads the president's own words, from the first fireside chat on, beside the offices that carried them.
