## What the poster prints

The picture is a photograph. A landing ship has its bow doors open on a rocky beach, a tank stands nearby, and troops walk ashore. A yellow panel holds a quotation with the speaker's full title. The demand sits under it.

[quote panel:] "THE WAR HAS NOW REACHED

THE STAGE OF CONTINUOUS

AMPHIBIOUS OFFENSIVES."

Rear Admiral ALAN G. KIRK, U.S.N.

COMMANDER, U. S. NAVAL TASK FORCE, EUROPEAN THEATER

## Who issued it

The Navy Department's Industrial Incentive Division issued it as NAVSHIPS 6. That division's job, as its name says, was to motivate the civilian industry building for the Navy. The archive's themes for the record include labor and the home front, and its audience is the domestic public. The pool also holds a companion numbered NAVSHIPS 5 with the same headline.

## How to read it

The archive tags this testimonial. A named commander with a European command is quoted, and the quotation is used to push delivery schedules in American yards. The admiral's sentence is a general statement about the war, not a request to workers. The poster supplies the link between them.

The record does not date the photograph or say where it was taken, and "D" Day on the sheet is in quotation marks, the planner's term for an unnamed landing date. This page does not tie the poster to a particular invasion, because the sheet does not. What it does show is honest in kind: a real kind of ship doing what the yard workers' ships would do. It asks for work, not hatred. No enemy appears on it at all.

The Army's parallel appeal to war workers is Stay on the Job, and the Air Forces version is Give Us More B-17's. A Navy industrial sheet that did use a slur is Your Enemy the Jap. The poster system is indexed on the Office of War Information hub. For the war government behind the Navy's industrial posters, from the Office of War Information to the exclusion order, see the Roosevelt administration essay.
