## What the poster prints

The image is a photograph, not a painting. Men wade through shallow water carrying a casualty on a stretcher. A blue headline runs above them and a red panel below holds the ask. In the archive's reading, the word "Yours" is underlined.

His war is over..

Yours isn't!

## Who issued it

The maker line is the U.S. Treasury Department, War Finance Division, printed by the Government Printing Office. WFD 964 is the division's number. The record does not name the photographer or the place and date of the photograph. It is not shown whether the man on the stretcher lived.

## How to read it

"His war is over" is ambiguous on purpose. It can mean wounded and going home, or it can mean dead. The poster does not settle it, and it does not need to. The weight of the line comes from the gap between a stretcher and a purchase.

The archive files this under transfer: the soldier's sacrifice is lent to the bond. That is accurate. It is also fair to say what the poster did not do. It did not claim that a bond would save this man. It claimed that the reader still had a part to play, which in a war fought by a conscript army and financed in part by voluntary loans was true. The appeal leans hard on guilt, and a reader can say so without calling the cause false.

The same Treasury series runs from the 4th War Loan shield card to the 7th War Loan flag raising. For the agencies behind the series, see the Office of War Information hub. Who ran the war loans, and beside which other offices, is in the Roosevelt administration essay.
