## What the sheet teaches

A farm lesson in pictures: drawn hens, roosters, chicks and eggs sit between boxed lines of text. A man in overalls points to the rooster, and in a later panel he weighs two birds on a carrying pole. The lesson runs as a chain: two eggs and two chicks start out the same size, but the chick of the better breed grows into a bigger hen that lays more and bigger eggs.

## Who signs it

This sheet names its sponsor. The footer points readers to "the Ministry of Agriculture" and to the American mission it calls Point Four, and the emblem reads "United States of America" in English. FRAME accordingly classes the source as openly identified. The U.S. Information Agency is the maker of record, and the archive's purpose field is "Warn or inform." No artist or print run is listed. Which country's ministry is meant is left open, and this page leaves it open too.

## How to read it

FRAME's one technique tag is plain folks: an ordinary farmer and barnyard drawings present the advice as everyday practice. That is about as gentle as the label gets. The claim on the sheet is a farming claim a reader could test for himself, and the poster tells him where to ask for more.

It still belongs in a propaganda archive, for an honest reason. A foreign government put its emblem beside useful advice, so the advice and the goodwill arrive together. Openly signed help of this kind is the easiest form of state persuasion to defend: the reader knows who is speaking and can take the chickens without taking the politics. Compare the Jordan health poster Destroy the Insects That Carry Disease and the 1953 American wheat photo sheet. The U.S. Information Agency hub has the wider set.
