## The panels

A quotation from the Secretary of State heads the sheet. Below it, five sections each begin with the word for "change" and pair a short quotation with pictures and captions: the end of colonialism, the polar regions, atomic power, outer space, and law and order. The archive lists the photographs as a speaker, two engineers, a polar map, a cancer-treatment machine, a rocket and the UN building; the captions place the machine at Columbia University and name the rocket as the Pioneer moon probe. The last line names the sender.

## A signed sheet, and a puzzle in the date

This poster says who made it. Its last line is the United States Information Service, and FRAME classes the source as openly identified. The National Archives files it in Record Group 306 with the agency's posters for Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

The catalog date is 1 January 1958. The sheet's own text cannot be that early: it quotes a speech given on 18 November 1958, and a caption reports the Nautilus voyage of 5 August 1958. The record does not explain the gap. The archive holds the same title in English (NAID 6948792) and Gujarati (NAID 6948790) under the same date.

## Progress by selection

FRAME tags glittering generalities, card stacking and testimonial. The testimonial is Dulles. The card stacking is the choice of panels: a submarine voyage, a cancer machine and a moon probe stand for the world's progress, and all three are American. The glittering phrase is the last heading, "from anarchy to order," under which the United States says it has tried "by its own example" to emphasise "the importance of law and justice."

The signature matters. A reader in India could see that this was the American government speaking about itself, and could weigh the boast accordingly. That is the standard the U.S. Information Agency hub applies, and this sheet meets it. The space panel can be set beside Survival in Space from the same year, and the atomic panel beside Atoms for Peace, page 1.
