## A sideboard of grievances

Content note: caricatured Black faces sit on top of this print, and the archive reproduces them unaltered.

The design is a piece of furniture. A sideboard labeled "Feed-Mans Bureau" holds books and drawers, and each one names a complaint against the Republicans. The archive lists them: the national debt, taxation, Reconstruction, Black suffrage, the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, and the Whisky Ring. On top of the sideboard sit caricatured Black faces and a bottle. The title, as cataloged, goes on: "a legacy for the people! $2,700,000,000 debt!! an expensive luxury."

The archive has no line-by-line transcription of the print, so the wording on each drawer is not quoted here.

## The record

No publisher is identified. The Library of Congress dates it, in brackets, to 1868, and the archive files it under that year's election. The issuer type is "Mixed," the audience the domestic public, and the purpose "Demonize." Its themes are party politics, economy and finance, and race and ethnicity. The archive retrieved the scan from the Library of Congress on 2 October 2026 and records it as public domain by age.

## The method

FRAME names two techniques. The first is name-calling, in the title: "Jacobin" and "Radical" are applied to a party, not argued. The second is card stacking. The furniture holds grievances and nothing else.

Some of the drawers carry real political questions. The size of the debt and the burden of taxation were fair subjects for a campaign, and a citizen who thought both were too high was entitled to say so loudly. The print does not stop there. It files Black suffrage among the costs, as if the vote of a fellow citizen were a line item, and it crowns the whole thing with racial caricature. That turns an argument about spending into an argument against equal rights, and it was wrong.

"Jacobin" was an old insult in American print by 1868. In 1800 a Federalist essay in the Gazette of the United States called Jefferson a "Jacobin chieftain," and the campaign print hub follows such labels from that year forward. For the other side of the 1868 race, see The Great American Tanner, and for another anti-Republican print from that year, Patriotism versus Bummerism.
