## Rhymed verse carries the lesson in four panels

Joe cleans the rifle. A week passes. A cross-section of the barrel shows pits forming. Joe misses the target, and a sergeant lets him hear about it. The verse runs across the panels in rhyme.

Joe Dope / cleaned his rifle, oh yes- / But he cleaned it just once- / and in less / Than a week the thing pits / So Joe gets no more hits / And the sergeant's remarks / you can guess!

AFTER ONLY ONE CLEANING RIFLE SWEATS.... FORMING PITS IN BARREL, DESTROYING ACCURACY

Moral: RIFLES SHOULD BE CLEANED EVERY DAY FOR THREE DAYS AFTER USE!

Don't be a dope! HANDLE EQUIPMENT RIGHT!

Transcription in the FRAME record, read from the image and not independently checked; verse line breaks shown with slashes, target-board labels omitted. Imprint also reads P.M.U. H.O.D. 19/6-14. Full record at propagandaarchive.org. NAID 514702, local id 44-PA-1143HH.

## The signature names Eisner as an Ordnance warrant officer

The artist signed with his rank and branch, "WARRANT OFF. Will Eisner, ORDNANCE." The Ordnance Department, U.S. Army, is the issuer, and the catalog gives the audience as the Army's own forces. The FRAME record says nothing more about Eisner, so his biography stays off this page. The archive holds many other Joe Dope sheets. This site has pages for three of them: Joe Dope Camouflaged His Garand (1942), the Cal. .50 comic (1943) and Joe Dope Isn't Bughouse or Lazy (1944).

## The insult is mild and the instruction does the work

The archive tags name-calling for "Don't be a dope!" and judges it faint beside the practical lesson. That reading holds. The label is a joke aimed at a fictional soldier, and the poster's real content is a maintenance rule with a reason attached: after one cleaning the rifle "sweats," pits form in the barrel, accuracy goes, so clean it three days running.

Training material that explains why a rule exists treats soldiers as people who can follow cause and effect. Compare the 1941 Navy recruiting verse A Call to a Breed That Never Dies, which uses rhyme to recruit rather than to instruct.
