## Just type

Type is the whole design. The archive describes red and navy lettering inside a border of stars, with striped rules, and no picture of a truck or a driver anywhere on the sheet.

## Issuer and purpose

The Office of Defense Transportation is the issuer named on the sheet, and the job number dates the printing to 1942. The record's purpose field reads "Recruit," for a "Domestic public," and its themes are the home front and economy and finance. The archive's notes describe it as a sign-up sheet for truck operators and say it does not state what membership required. The National Archives copy is in Record Group 44.

## Joining what?

"Sign up here" points the reader to a place to enlist. The poster does not say what he would be signing. The archive calls the technique mild. The national initials and the flag colors stand in for any argument, a glittering generality, and the word "Corps" lends the program a military sound.

That gap is the point worth recording. A citizen asked to join something by a federal office is owed a plain statement of what he is agreeing to: a pledge, a set of maintenance rules, an inspection, or a duty. This sheet gives the name of the body and nothing else. The request may have been entirely voluntary and entirely sensible; conserving trucks is what the program's name says it was for. A reader of the poster alone could not tell. The record, likewise, does not show what a member signed.

The Army's Antiaircraft Artillery Command, Eastern Defense Command, took a different route to the same subject with Are You Like Benny?, a cartoon of a dented, leaking truck. A sign-up offer that does state its terms, plainly and with a promise of no charge, is the Employment Service's Can You Do Farm Work? from the same year. For the government that ran the home-front offices, see the Roosevelt administration essay.
