## A revolutionary weekly in Los Angeles

Regeneración called itself a revolutionary weekly "written by workers and for workers." The record names it as the paper of the Mexican Liberal Party, edited by Anselmo L. Figueroa, and credits the lead article to Antonio de P. Araujo. This is issue No. 154, dated Saturday, 16 August 1913.

La Invasion Americana

[English, from the archive's translation:] [...] The Panama Canal, which will open in 1915, demands the possession of the countries of Mexico and Central America by the Americans; [...] everything cries out invasion of Mexico. [...] Woodrow Wilson, Bryan, and the other ridiculous Democratic reformists, at the precise hour that the powerful American plutocracy demands it, will order their marines landed on the coasts of Mexico and their army corps to invade across the northern border.

## Three pieces on one page

The lead article argues that American property in Mexico, built, in its words, on the slavery of Mexican workers and corrupt concessions, will draw the United States into an invasion once the revolution threatens it. Beside it, a cartoon reprinted from the Oakland Tribune shows crosses for Madero and Suárez next to a fallen figure labeled "Mexican Rebels," under the word "Next?" Lower down, the column "El Peligro Amarillo" says Wilhelm II was right about a "yellow peril" and blames "Chinese capitalism" and "the Japanese bourgeoisie" (the archive's translation).

The archive tags the page with name-calling, fear appeal, and scapegoating. The name-calling runs at Wilson and Bryan, called "ridiculous" reformers. The fear is of invasion. The scapegoating is in the column, which takes a racial slogan and points it at Asian merchants.

## What a free press carried

This is a paper published inside the United States predicting that the President would invade a neighbor at the bidding of "plutocracy." It is sharp, partisan, and in places ugly. It is also the kind of speech a republic is supposed to tolerate: a minority press attacking the government in its own language. The column's racism is a separate wrong from the paper's politics.

The Wilson administration essay covers the government's record on speech in these years. The 1880 Puck cover on the Chinese shows how much older the hostility toward Chinese immigrants in American print was.
