## The image

Steinlen drew this in crayon. In the archive's description, a column of Serbian refugees, women and old men, walks behind two soldiers. One wears a French kepi and rests a comradely hand on the shoulder of the other, a bearded Serbian soldier. The words sit below them, followed by an address for donations.

## Dates

The archive dates the poster to 1916. The artist's signature reads "steinlen 1915," and the Library of Congress rights line gives 1915–1916. This page keeps the archive's year in the title and notes the signed date here.

## Whose ally?

The archive tags the poster with transfer. The Allied uniform, the hand on the shoulder, and the word "ally" carry loyalty to the Allies over to an appeal for a small country's civilians. In the United States in these years, that word asked for a little more than it said. The country was not at war when the archive dates the sheet, and "our ally" in a New York poster borrows a wartime bond that Americans had not yet formally made.

That is the propaganda in it, and it is mild. What the poster asks for is money, sent by choice to a named committee at a printed address on Fifth Avenue. No law requires the gift and no one is shamed for withholding it.

## Related

Two 1918 sheets on this site make other uses of the same sympathies. The Fourth Liberty Loan poster Remember Belgium shows a spiked-helmet soldier pulling a girl past a burning town. The Red Cross poster The Greatest Mother in the World is another relief appeal, built around a giant nurse holding a wounded soldier. The Wilson administration essay covers the road from 1915 to the war message of April 1917.
