## What the sheet said

The picture, in the archive's description, is a crowd of smiling workers of both sexes packed into one small red open car that is shedding parts. The band underneath is the instruction. The imprint credits the source drawing, and it misspells the name.

HI HO! HI HO! IT'S OFF TO WORK WE GO!

HELP WIN THE WAR

DOUGLAS WAR PRODUCTION DRIVE

Transcription in the FRAME record, including the imprint's spelling "SUESS." Signature read there as Lee Morehouse, Illustrated Parts Catalog. Full record at propagandaarchive.org. NAID 514471, RG 44, 44-PA-964.

## What it is not

This sheet does not depict Japanese people, the Japanese government, or Japanese Americans. It is a ride-sharing joke for a war plant. People who search for Dr. Seuss's Japanese cartoons are usually looking for the drawings he made for the New York newspaper PM. Those drawings are not objects in this snapshot, and this site does not paste them in from memory. The creator note is Dr. Seuss and the cartoons this record holds.

## The demand, such as it is

The demand is voluntary on its face: get in the car. There is no fine and no oath. The liberty point is the one the song skips. A plant poster can shame an empty seat without telling the worker who owns the car, what the shift pays, or whether the gasoline ration was his to spend. "Help win the war" borrows the country for a parking problem. That is ordinary. It is not the same act as a poster that names an enemy race. Douglas did that too, in 1942, on the Tokio Kid sheets. The difference should stay visible.
