A green turtle in a green hat sits between two lines asking how many readers already wear the green hat, and whether a "Soviet-Russian-style marriage law" has made them a turtle in a green hat.

## The sheet

It is the simplest sheet in the set. One drawing, a green turtle wearing a small green hat. One line above on a dark band, one line below on a cream band, and the serial in the corner. Small phonetic letters run beside the characters.

你們有多少人己戴上了綠帽子?

蘇俄式的婚姻法有沒有叫你做烏龜戴綠帽子?

7255

FRAME transcription; the phonetic (zhuyin) letters are omitted, and 己 is printed for 已. The archive's English, a machine translation by Claude not verified by a fluent reader: "How many of you have already put on the green hat? / Has the Soviet-Russian-style marriage law made you a turtle wearing a green hat?" Full record at propagandaarchive.org.

As FRAME explains, both the turtle and the green hat are Chinese terms for a man whose wife is unfaithful.

## Who issued it

The leaflet names no issuer. FRAME attributes it to United Nations Command psychological warfare run by the U.S. Army and classes the source as blurred. The scan, 719 pixels wide, came to Wikimedia Commons from psywarrior.com, and the Commons page names the U.S. federal government as author and tags it public domain. There is no NARA identifier in the record.

## How to read it

FRAME tags it name-calling, and the name is about as personal as a leaflet can get. It does not argue about the war at all. It tells a soldier far from home that his wife may be with someone else, that his comrades suspect the same, and that a law made by his own government in the Soviet style is to blame.

That is a recognizable technique. Armies have long tried to make the soldier think about home instead of the line. Here it is done with a sexual insult, aimed at men the sheet could not see, about women the sheet knew nothing of. It contains no fact a reader could check. The one political claim, about the marriage law, is a label and not an account of what the law said.

A fair reader can say two things. Leaflets like this were a lawful weapon, and a shamed soldier who stops fighting is better than a dead one. And this particular sheet trades on contempt and doubt, not information. Its family-themed companion, leaflet 8724, shows a family at home and blames the party for the separation, which is the same theme handled without the jeer. Another 1953 sheet aimed at the same troops is leaflet 7230. The full set is at US and UN Command messaging in the Korean War.
