A U.S. Army recruiting poster printed by the Government Printing Office in September 1968 shows a mud-streaked infantry leader, mouth open, kneeling in a field under the line "Army Officer Candidate School prepares you for leadership like no other school can," and closes "Your future, your decision...choose ARMY OCS."
What it prints
An infantry leader in helmet and fatigues, streaked with mud, kneels in a field with his mouth open and one arm thrown out, as if calling men forward. A rifle and soldiers lying prone are behind him. The headline sits above; the close sits at the foot with the printer's line.
Army Officer Candidate School prepares you for leadership like no other school can.
Your future, your decision...choose ARMY OCS

How to read it
FRAME tags it glittering generalities. "Like no other school can" is a superlative nobody can measure. The text names no service obligation, no length of commitment, no specialty, and no place. The picture is a combat scene, which is honest about the job, though the words never mention combat.
The line at the bottom is the one to look at twice. "Your future, your decision" was printed in 1968, when the draft was in force. For a man already facing induction, applying to officer school was still a choice, and the word "decision" was true in that narrow sense. A free country's best recruiting argument is that service is chosen. The poster makes that argument in four words, in a year when the government was also compelling service. Both facts belong in the reading.
Recruiting in the same war ran on both sides of the Pacific. The National Archives' Vietnam poster series also holds South Vietnamese appeals for helicopter and jet pilots, in the same records as A Soldier in the War Against Poverty. The Defense Department's case to the public for the war itself is Why Vietnam?
