What the editors chose

The archive calls the invasion itself a documented event. Its technique tag, card stacking, is about the arrangement. The first banner says "Axis," though the Associated Press copy below it names Germany and reports Italy following. The second banner goes to Japan, which the archive reads as a choice made for readers in the Pacific Northwest, and the left column is given to Tokyo's situation and its leaders' conferences. In the archive's reading, the Soviet side gets a single AP column.

That is ordinary news judgment, and it is worth seeing as a choice. A local paper decided its readers would care, right after the invasion itself, about what Japan did next. The page also carries an American story with a government angle, "U. S. TAKES SHIP," with a photo caption about Coast Guardsmen guarding a Danish freighter that the government had put on its service list.

In December

The same paper's front page for 8 December 1941 has its own entry: A Juneau front page the day after Pearl Harbor. Read together, the two pages show a paper watching Japan in June and reporting war with Japan in December. The Roosevelt administration essay describes the voluntary press code that newspapers worked under after Pearl Harbor; this June page predates it.
