An English-language event poster for "The Synchronized Swimming Team of Oakland, California" at Picnic Paradise in Landhi, under the sponsorship of the Karachi Swimming Association, with a school performance the next day. It sits in the U.S. Information Agency file, catalog date 25 October 1956 (NAID 6948820).
The bill
A pool photograph shows swimmers linked to form a square. A second picture shows the coach holding a trophy. The rest is the business of an event: place, sponsor, two dates, ticket outlets, prices, and a closing line naming Ferozsons of Karachi.

Who is speaking
The only sponsor printed is local, the Karachi Swimming Association, and the one other name on the sheet, Ferozsons, is also given as Karachi. FRAME's maker line repeats that sponsor "as printed" and adds that the sheet was distributed through the U.S. Information Agency in its series for Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The National Archives catalogs it in Record Group 306 on 25 October 1956; the show itself is billed for Sunday, November 4. FRAME classes the source as blurred and gives the purpose as "Persuade or win support."
No message at all
The archive's single tag is plain folks, and it notes that the poster prints no political message. That is accurate. Nothing on the sheet mentions the United States government, communism, aid or alliance. A team from an American city comes to swim, a coach is named with her trophy, and schoolchildren are offered a one-rupee ticket.
Of all the ways a government can seek good will abroad, this is one of the easiest to defend: real people doing a real thing in public, with tickets anyone could buy. The one question it leaves open is the one the archive's source label raises. The poster says a Karachi club sponsored the evening and says nothing of an American agency. The record does not show what the agency's part was, only that the sheet ended up in its file. A visitor in Landhi who wondered who had brought the team would not have found the answer on the wall.
Concert bills in the same file differ on that point. The Marian Anderson bill in Taipei names the State Department fund that helped present her; the Louis Armstrong poster in Beirut names no sponsor. Readers in Dacca saw a Pakistani student convention in Louisville in the Bengali photo page Chitra Katha No. 20. The U.S. Information Agency hub holds the rest of the cultural program.
