A 1951 Crusade for Freedom donor stamp sets a skyline of churches, a synagogue, a minaret, onion domes and a pagoda above a red scene of soldiers attacking civilians, with the line "Give freedom to the captive nations! Fight communism!"
What the stamp shows
The design is in two bands. The upper one is bright: a skyline of church spires, a Star of David on a synagogue, a minaret, onion domes, and a pagoda. The lower one is red, and shows soldiers attacking civilians. The text is short:
GIVE FREEDOM TO THE CAPTIVE NATIONS!
FIGHT COMMUNISM!
Crusade For Freedom
Who issued it
The Crusade for Freedom, which the archive lists with the National Committee for a Free Europe, issued the stamp in 1951 and sold it to raise money for anti-communist broadcasting. The archive's maker line notes that the committee was covertly funded by the CIA, and classes the source as blurred. The image came from Wikimedia Commons, via the Cold War Radios collection, on 27 September 2026. The record calls it a donor stamp, sold to fund the campaign.
How to read it
The stamp puts many faiths on the same side of a line, with violence on the other. The skyline is a picture of religious liberty, and the scene below it is what its absence looks like. Freedom of worship is a fair thing to fight for, and saying so on a stamp is not a lie.
The method is transfer all the same. The moral weight of the temples is lent to a fund-raising drive, and the buyer is invited to feel he has stood with them. What the stamp could not tell him is the thing the archive record does: the organization selling it was covertly funded by the CIA. A campaign for freedom of conscience abroad asked for conscience money at home under a name that hid its sponsor. Both halves of that sentence are true, and the second does not cancel the first.
The case study Americans were asked to chip in for a private radio lists this stamp among the Crusade's surviving pieces, with the Freedom-Gram and the Truth Dollar.
