US civil rights era sheets, cartoons and photographs, 1954–1969
This gallery collects 27 records from the FRAME snapshot dated 1954 to 1969 that speak to American race relations or the war on poverty: thirteen U.S. Information Agency sheets made for audiences abroad, one JUSPAO poster from Vietnam, ten Washington Star cartoons by Jim Berryman, and three private items. Cards run in date order and show the identifier the archive records.
Content note: some cards quote segregationist signs, a 1969 poster that calls the police "pigs," and captions that use the word "Negro." Card titles are the archive's catalog titles, unchanged.
The grid puts three kinds of maker side by side. The government sheets are the U.S. Information Agency's: Lincoln posters for Asia and Iran, picture pages from Beirut, Dacca and Accra, an embassy bulletin for Costa Rica, and a Free World supplement for Manila. One JUSPAO poster from Vietnam is here for its phrase "the war against poverty." The cartoons are Jim Berryman's for the Washington Evening Star, kept in the Records of the U.S. Senate. The private items are two photographs, the March on Washington and the Little Rock rally of August 1959, and one poster, the Black Panther Party's memorial for Fred Hampton.
A sheet is here when its text or its catalog description is about race in America, a civil rights measure, or the war on poverty. The agency's Lincoln sheets are included because each prints the Emancipation Proclamation or the words "all men are created equal." Berryman cartoons that mention civil rights only as one item among many, like the 1958 fence-mending candidate with "Integration" on one rail, are included so the run is complete. The archive holds Arabic and French editions of several Beirut sheets; only the English editions are shown.
Where this site has an essay, the card opens it. Otherwise it opens the FRAME record. If the line under the title says "no primary id in the snapshot," the record gives no NARA number, and none is supplied here. The snapshot holds no Citizens' Council or Klan leaflet from these years and no domestic antipoverty poster; the parent page, US civil rights era messaging, 1954–1969, says where those subjects are covered instead.
