Rationing and price-control sheets, 1941–1947
68 sheets from the FRAME snapshot, dated 1941 to 1947, on ration books and coupons, ceiling prices, rent control, the black market and wartime inflation. Most were issued by the Office of Price Administration and its partner offices; a few are private. Cards run in date order and show the identifier the archive records.
A sheet is on this grid if its text, or the archive's description of it, is about rationing, ration stamps or points, ceiling or "top legal" prices, rent control, the black market, or the wartime cost of living, and that subject is the sheet's message or one of its listed requests. Sheets that mention a price or a ration only in passing, or mean an Army field ration, are not. Twenty-nine cards name the Office of Price Administration as maker, four the Office of Economic Stabilization, nine the Office of War Information, and three the War Production Board or the War Food Administration. Eleven name no agency, six were printed for campaigns run with merchants, and six are private.
The cards run by year. Within a year they keep the snapshot's order, and the two cartoons with an exact newspaper date come last in their year. Where this site has an essay on the sheet, the card opens it; otherwise it opens the FRAME record.
Under each title is the date the archive gives and the identifier it records. For 59 cards that is a NAID in Record Group 44, World War II Posters, at the National Archives. Five of the six OWI cartoon drawings carry two NAIDs, one for their Record Group 208 series and one for the item, and the Berryman cartoons do the same for their Senate series. One Office of Economic Stabilization poster comes from the University of North Texas and has no National Archives number; its card says "no primary id in the snapshot."
The archive's 1941 dates stand as given. The reasons for what is left out, salvage drives, tire and car-sharing posters, housing appeals and war bonds, are on the hub page, Rationing, price ceilings and the OPA, 1941–1947.
